Next Meeting: March 9
The Junior Friends is a community service organization of local teens that has been helping the Library since 1998. The group meets every 2nd Tuesday of the month, in the Auditorium of the Main Library. Membership is open to all students in grades 7 through 12.
The JFOL assist the adult Friends of the Massillon Public Library with book sales, the Massillon-McKinley parade, the Massillon Fun Fest and the annual Christmas parade. Occasionally, the JFOL help with other library-sponsored events, when requested.
In addition, the JFOL sponsors its own fundraisers, such as Inkjet/Laser Toner and Cell Phone Recycling (sponsored by Funding Factory), bake sales, raffles or special events with the Children's Department. They help plan and implement several programs for teens, in coordination with the Young Adult Specialist, such as Halloween parties, themed lock-ins, board and video game nights, book clubs, craft clubs and summer reading activities.
Funds earned through membership dues and fundraisers help cover the expenses for teen programming and for special items in the Teen Area. Finally, the JFOL serve as a Teen Advisory Board, selecting popular materials for the Library's collections, such as books, movies, music and video games. They also write book/movie/music reviews and discuss other programs and ideas.
Dues are $5.00 a calendar year. Teens may substitute volunteer hours for the membership dues, but only with permission from the Young Adult Specialist.
If you would like to join the Junior Friends, please stop in the Main Library and pick up an application in the Teen Area, or print one from this page and return it to James Nagy.
