Synopsis:
This is a look back at white middle class life, customs and social
mores of America in the 1950's. Julianne Moore's character plays a suburban
housewife, dutifully supporting her husband's career by being the perfect wife,
hostess and mother to their two children. Intruding into her world of lunch
with her friends and chauffering her children to and from school and dance
lessons is the sudden realization that her husband is a homosexual. Sessions
with a psychiatrist fail to change his orientation and divorce ensues. Her
world shattered by these events, she develops a deep friendship with her African
American gardener, a cultured widower who has a school aged daughter. The film
shows them falling in love but unable to act on their feelings because of
Julianne Moore's character's being trapped in the social conventions of the
time.
I would recommend this movie!
Why?
The film brilliantly captures the decade of the 1950's and shows how much our
attitudes toward homosexuality and interracial romantic relationships have
evolved. It is provocative and extremely well acted.
The costumes, automobiles and interior decorations are right on the money.
