Current Operating Costs of the West Side
Branch of the Massillon Public Library
- Annual operating costs for the 7,000 square foot West Side Branch were $51,268.32. This total does not include administrative/custodial supplies or copy machine costs. (Click here for a cost breakdown.)
- It currently costs $4,272.36 a month to keep the West Side Branch open when only 11,000 materials (excluding interlibrary loans) were circulated at the West Side Branch last year.
- At a little more than 900 circulated materials per month, it costs approximately $4.66 to circulate one item at the West Side Branch compared with a cost of $1.61 for each item circulated at the Main location. (This figure does not prorate administrative wages for either location.)
Renovation Costs of the West Side
Branch of the Massillon Public Library
- Many costly renovations are required to keep the West Side Branch functional and safe. It would cost approximately $595,000 to bring all of the systems up to code:
- building improvements (architectural, mechanical and electrical) would cost $500,000
- project contingencies could cost $50,000
- soft costs (fees, permits, etc.) would total $45,000
(source: Harris/Day Architects 2000 structural evaluation.)
- In addition, as of June 1, 2001, the existing telephone lines will no longer support computer Internet connections because of technology changes. Installing new computer lines would cost in excess of $5,500, with a monthly charge of at least $100.
Future Library Services for West Side Residents
- The Library is currently investigating the possibility of acquiring a bookmobile which would be available to our entire service area and would provide tax payers with better circulation per dollar than a stationary branch. The materials from the current West Side collection could be used as a core collection for the future bookmobile.
- Many Library services are available online to all our patrons, no matter where they are located.
