Tax Questions
  • The Library Staff cannot help you file your tax returns. We are not tax professionals and we are not permitted to answer tax-related questions or offer tax advice.

  • If you are experiencing a technical problem with one of our machines, we will try to fix your computer, but we cannot do anything to help you with your actual tax information.

  • Most tax sites require special software to be able to view and print the forms. You can download the Adobe Acrobat Reader for free at Adobe's site.

  • Instructions for downloading and installing an Acrobat Reader on your computer can be found on this page, provided by the Federation of Tax Administrators.

Note: The Library computers are all equipped with the appropriate software for viewing and printing tax forms.

  • Using the Library Computers to File Taxes
E-file, short for electronic filing, is the name of the IRS' program that allows you to submit your tax returns on the Internet. There are a number of sites that offer e-filing services. These services are not free. Payment must be submitted online by entering credit card or debit account information. For information about e-file providers, click here.

You will need to have an email address in order to file taxes electronically. If you do not have an email address, visit this directory to locate a free email address provider.

You may use the Library computers to file your taxes electronically. When doing so, please keep the following guidelines in mind:

    1. There is a one hour time limit on the Library computers located in the Reference Department. If your turn is over and someone else is waiting, you will not be able to continue working. Many of the online filing services allow you to save your information and return to it at a later date. It is your responsibility to make sure that you save your information properly before your turn at the computer is over. The Library suggests that you begin saving your information ten minutes before your turn at the computer is scheduled to end.

    2. The Library tries to be sure that our equipment is in good working order, but we cannot guarantee that the computers will always work properly or that our Internet connections will always be reliable. The Library is NOT responsible for any problems you may encounter, any losses or penalties you may incur, or any damages you may suffer either directly or indirectly from using our computers. For more information about this disclaimer, please see our terms of use page.

    3. The Library computers are used by a number of people every day. The Library cannot guarantee that information you enter into one of our machines will not be accessible to others later. When you are finished filing your tax returns, it is advisable that you stop by the Reference Desk and ask the librarian on duty to restart the machine you were using.

    4. The Library Staff is not permitted to offer you assistance with your tax returns. If you are experiencing a technical problem with one of our machines, we will try to fix your computer, but we cannot do anything to help you with your actual tax information.
