POSITION: Substitute Technology Center Assistant

PAY RATE: $10.18/hour. NON-EXEMPT, HOURLY


WORK SCHEDULE: On an as needed basis.


Week days/evenings and Weekends.



TRAINING PERIOD: Up to Forty (40) hours (combination training/worked). Improvement must be shown during this combined training/work period for continued employment through full forty (40) hours of training period.


QUALIFICATIONS:

At least one of the following:

One (1) year of post-high school computer technology training with one (1) year of computer-related work experience required. Two (2) years of computer-related work experience, preferred.

(OR)

High school (Vocational or Regular) or GED with three (3) years of computer-related work experience required. Four (4) years of computer-related work experience, preferred.

Must enjoy working with the public.

Customer service experience, a plus. Teacher or trainer experience, especially training others in basic hardware and software, a plus. Experience with public library operations, desirable.

ALSO REQUIRED:

Available on short notice. Reliable transportation for getting to work, and attending meetings/training seminars away from work site. Proof of auto liability insurance. Working telephone. Criminal background check is required to be completed post-offer. Result of background check may affect employment status.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Knowledge of…

Working knowledge of office productivity software (i.e. MS Office, Corel, WP) and desktop publishing sufficient for assisting patrons.

Working knowledge of Windows.

PC hardware and operation.

Skills…

English language oral and written communication skills sufficient for work with supervisor, other staff, and patrons.

Good reading and comprehension of English language.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Good visual skills.

General math.

Good computer/word processing and Internet/e-mail.

Ability to…

Consistently present Massillon Public Library and its services in a positive manner.

Follow library’s written general and department-specific standards, and personnel policies.

Attend meetings and workshops appropriate to position.

Understand patrons’ computer software and hardware needs, and be able to explain in laymen’s terms how

to fill those needs.

Work effectively as a team member.

Work effectively under pressure.

Perform clerical tasks relevant to position.

Follow directions.

Work independently and make sound decisions.

Handle physical aspects of position which include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, bending, stooping, moving, reaching, and manual dexterity required for computer work, and lifting up to 35 lbs. There is also exposure to electrical hazards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists patrons in the Technology Center in the following ways:

--how to locate an Internet site using a URL or search engine

--general use of office productivity software, desktop publishing

--how to set up and access e-mail accounts

--how to print or scan information

--how to save information to storage devices (i.e., CD, Floppy, USB).

Signs up patrons for Technology Center computers.

Collects fees for printing and purchase of storage mediums.

Logs on computer equipment, as needed.

Keeps public work stations sanitized.

Maintains computer and printer supplies, and re-sale items which include CD’s, USB drives, headphone ear protectors, earbuds.

Does basic troubleshooting of hardware.

Reports hardware and software problems to the Technology staff.

Keeps other Technology Center staff current on equipment and software problems.

Keeps log of department’s transaction statistics.

OTHER DUTIES:

May assist Technology Department with teaching computer classes to public and staff.

Attends meetings and workshops appropriate to position.

Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
