Hatchet is an involved story of a 13 year old surviving the wild outdoors with his only tool, a hatchet. One theme revolves around Brian's learning to observe and act in a maturing manner.
This book would be good reading for grades 6-8. New vocabulary words are introduced. The drama is thought provoking with the reader's continuous desire to see if Brian will survive. On a score of 1-10 (with 10 being the highest) this scores a 10.
