The book selected by the One Book One Community literacy program for 2012 is Chris Spielman’s heartfelt memoir of his wife’s battle against breast cancer,
That’s Why I’m Here: The Chris and Stefanie Spielman Story.
Beyond its uplifting message, “That’s Why I’m Here” is a book with strong local ties. Spielman is a Canton native who starred in football at Massillon’s Washington High School and at Ohio State University. His late wife was from Jackson Township and founded the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research, in Columbus.
Spielman will appear on October 2, at 7:00 p.m. in Malone University’s Johnson Center auditorium. Additionally, thirteen book discussions will take place in September and October 31. A discussion of the book, particularly the sections dealing with Massillon football, will take place Monday, October 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the Massillon Public Library auditorium. Spielman is not scheduled to attend, but there should be plenty of local readers with strong opinions.
