POSITION: Outreach Specialist      

                                                      

PAY GRADE: 13                          CLASSIFICATION:  I                 NON-EXEMPT, HOURLY

 

REPORTS TO: Outreach Services Manager

HOURS PER WEEK:  8                                      HOURLY RATE:  $9.47

QUALIFICATIONS: At least one of the following: One (1) year of post-high school training in a directly related field, with one (1) year of public library experience or similar work required.  Two (2) years of public library experience or similar work, preferred (OR) high school diploma or GED, with three (3) years of public library experience or similar work required.  Equivalent experience in a directly related field with lesser formal education will be considered.  Storytelling experience, a plus.  

Individual must enjoy working with the public, especially children.

ALSO REQUIRED: Valid driver’s License.  Good driving record.  Reliable transportation.  Proof of auto liability insurance.  Working telephone.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

General knowledge of popular authors and books, in particular, those for pre-school age.

English language oral and written communication skills sufficient for work with all staff and patrons.

Strong interpersonal and oral presentation skills for presenting programs to children.

Good reading and comprehension of the English language.

Good organizational skills.

Good computer and word processing skills, including e-mail.

Good general math skills.  

Ability to consistently present Massillon Public Library and its services in a positive manner.

Follow library’s written general and department-specific standards, and personnel policies.

Meet regular work attendance requirements.

Attend training and workshops appropriate to position.

Create, develop and implement age-appropriate programs for pre-school children.

Work effectively as a team member.Deal effectively with a wide variety of patrons, especially pre-school age children.Perform clerical tasks relevant to position.

Work effectively under pressure.Follow directions.Work independently and make sound decisions.

Handle physical aspects of position which include, but are not limited to: moving, bending, stretching, dexterity required for climbing/descending steps, shelving materials, manual dexterity required for computer work, physical agility necessary to present children’s programs, and lifting up to 35 lbs.  Ability to push/pull loaded carts.

 

 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Plans and presents programs at pre-schools on bookmobile route, sharing this responsibility with other Outreach Department staff.  Performs routine circulation tasks connected with department’s services.  

Performs reader’s advisory and basic reference service for patrons.  

Performs computer searches to locate and reserve library materials.  

Collects fines and fees.  Assists with opening, monitoring, and securing bookmobile, as assigned.  

Stocks bookmobile with appropriate collection, materials and supplies for scheduled stops.  

Shelves materials on bookmobile and in bookmobile stack room.  Performs clerical tasks, as required.



 


OTHER DUTIES:
Attends general staff meetings.  Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
