The Children’s Department of the Massillon Public Library invites children of all ages through those entering sixth grade to experience "Dig Into Reading!" by joining the Summer Reading Program and exploring underground animals and insects; rocks, minerals and fossils; and gardening. Registration for the Reader and the Read-To-Me Programs begins Monday, June 3
. Participants will receive a special “Dig Into Reading!” plastic book bag containing a reading record, program schedule, activity sheets, and letter to parents. Registration for the Summer Reading Program will continue throughout its eight-week duration.
Children and parents will keep track of the amount of time spent reading or being read to. Drawings for prizes will be held each week for those meeting the reading goal, which is two hours per week for Readers and one hour per week for Read-To-Me's. All entries will be put into a drawing for a very special Bookmobile Party for one Reader and one Read-to-Me from each of the library’s locations. The winning entrants will receive a party package complete with a visit from the big blue bus for himself and 10 friends and a craft project, refreshments and a story.
Each week, materials will be available for a different "make & take" craft, such as a wiggle worm or a ladybug headband. Also, the Summer Reading Program mascot, Wilbur the Naked Mole Rat, will be hidden in a different location within the library. Those finding him can enter a drawing to win a prize. A prize will also be given to an entry drawn from all the correct answers in the “Guess How Many in the Jar” contest.
A complete schedule of events is available in the Children’s Department and online
. Some of the many exciting events include: We Dig T-Shirt Stenciling, presented by Rochelle Kramer; Rocks Rock Open House, presented by the staff of the Wilderness Center; and Underground Animals, presented by The Akron Zoo.
The library’s bookmobile
will be a Summer Reading Program on wheels, and will offer drawings and prizes, and have lots of fun new books on board for all to borrow. Schedules of summer bookmobile stops are available at the library, on the library’s website, or on the “big blue bus.”
The Barry Askren Memorial Branch
, in Navarre and the Pam S. Belloni Branch
, located at Fairless Elementary School in Brewster are also offering Summer Reading Programs, complete with events, contests and prizes at each of those locations. For more information, call the Barry Askren Memorial Branch at 330.879.2113 or the Pam S. Belloni Branch at 330.767.9939.
Studies show that children who do not read over the summer can lose up to two months of reading achievement and language skills. Participating in a Summer Reading Program, where the emphasis is on fun but still revolves around reading, can help a child start the upcoming school year at an advantage rather than a disadvantage.
