Since 2006, Mel Herncane, his wife Ann, and his son Ted have been giving $1,000 annually to the library's Children's Department in memory of Edward D'Alessandro, Sr., a family friend who began his career as a Page at the Cleveland Public Library and moved up through the ranks to become Director. He eventually had a successful second career at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. Mr. D’Alessandro loved visiting Massillon and our library. The original plan was to give $1,000 a year for ten years, but the Herncanes recently pledged to keep the donations going through 2020.
Gifts in the past have funded multicultural programming, children’s books, language software, and much more. This year the greatest need was for the replacement of some children’s department furnishings, including a set of small chairs shaped like leaves which are perfect for the forest-themed room, a book spinner, and a sensory activity for Special Needs nights.
Library Director Sherie Brown notes that, “the Herncane family is doing for Mr. D’Alessandro exactly what we all wish our friends and family will do after we’re gone from the earth. They continue to honor him in a way that reflects his life and talents, and by doing so, benefit the community. We are grateful every year for their generosity.”
