Circulation Assistant Substitutes

 

The Massillon Public Library is looking to hire Circulation Assistant Substitutes. Substitutes do not have regular hours. Substitutes are employed on an as-needed basis.

POSITION DETAILS:

 

Position Title: Circulation Assistant Substitute

Reports To: Circulation/Technology Manager, Children’s Services Manager, and/or Branch Manager

Position Type: Non-exempt, Hourly

Full Time/Part Time: Substitute – as needed

Rate of Pay: $8.65/hour

Retirement: Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS)

(Library contributes 14%; Employee contributes 10%)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate degree in a directly related field required. One (1) year of experience in a public library or similar work in addition to Associate, a plus. (OR) One (1) year of post-high school training in a directly related field, with two (2) years of experience in a public library or similar work required. Three (3) years of directly related experience, preferred.

    • Equivalent experience in a related field with lesser formal education will be considered.

  • Individual must enjoy working with the public, being around children and working in a lively, creative atmosphere.

  • Must have reliable transportation, proof of auto liability insurance, and a working telephone.

  • Criminal background checks are conducted post-job offer. Results of background checks may affect employment decision.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of significant authors and books, online catalogs.

  • Good English language oral and written communication skills.

  • Good reading and comprehension of English language.

  • Basic computer/word processing and Internet/e-mail skills.

  • Ability to consistently present Massillon Public Library and its services in a positive manner.

  • Follow library’s written general and department-specific standards, and personnel policies.

  • Meet regular work attendance requirements; attend meetings appropriate to position.

  • Relate to and meet the special service needs of children and young adults.

  • Deal effectively with the general public. Work effectively as a team member.

  • Learn quickly and retain information. Pay close attention to detail.

  • Work effectively under pressure. Perform clerical tasks relevant to position.

  • Follow directions. Work independently and make sound decisions.

  • Handle physical aspects of position which include, but are not limited to: standing, moving, sitting, manual dexterity required for computer work, and lifting up to 35 lbs. Ability to push/pull loaded carts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Checks materials in/out; renews materials in person or by phone.

  • Answers telephone and routes calls.

  • Assists patrons with copier and locating materials.

  • Assists with book displays.

  • Assists with checking in AV items from delivery service; attaches hold slips; alphabetizes holds; labels items for outgoing transport; locks DVD & CD cases.

  • Assists with circulation desk set up.

  • Assists with opening and closing of department/building and closing tasks, which may include turning on/off computers/copiers and locking exterior doors.

  • Assists with pulling materials for reserves.

  • Assists with sorting and packing of library materials received and sent via delivery service.

  • Clears library materials from tables and clears book drop.

  • Clears patron records when fees are collected.

  • Collects fees for overdue, lost or damaged materials.

  • Issues new or replacement library cards.

  • Keeps current on popular literature.

  • Maintains order/appearance of shelved materials, display racks.

  • Performs computer searches to locate and reserve materials for patrons, including SEO requests.

  • Provides basic computer instruction to patrons and performs simple computer troubleshooting.

  • Registers patrons for department’s programs and signs up patrons for computer use.

  • Shelves library materials.
