This book is strong in character, story and language.
Summary:
The Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul is in the middle of a civil war
between Empress Maud and King Stephen. When Brother Cadfael is asked to help
prepare and bury 94 prisoners hanged at the order of King Stephen, he discovers
one extra body. This unknown man had been murdered and his body dumped with
those of the hanged men in an attempt to cover up the sinful deed.
Meanwhile, a young man is put under the care of Brother Cadfael in hopes that
he will be safe from the war. But this teenager is hiding more than one might
expect.
Can Brother Cadfael solve the mystery of one corpse too many and keep his ward
free from harm's way?
I would recommend this book!
Why?
It is an interesting story, and the use of forensics is wonderful. The
description of the area is beautiful. One can almost imagine she/he is actually
in 1138 A.D. England.
Other suggested reading:
There are many other books with Brother Cadfael as the main character.
