Title: The Probable Future
Author: Alice Hoffman
type of book: Fiction
call number: Fic
|
This book is strong in character, story and language.
Summary:
Three generations of women come to terms with each other, the men in
their lives, and the "gifts" each took possession of on her thirteenth
birthday (the gift to spot a liar, the gift to read others' dreams, the gift to
see the future). Sometimes these are a blessing, but more often a curse; and
have frequently been misinterpreted or have caused rifts between mother and
daughter, or even put someone in peril.
I would recommend this book!
Why?
Alice Hoffman is the best, and this is the best of the best. It sounds
silly, but the supernatural element only adds atmosphere -- the real story is the
humanity of the characters, and would appeal to anyone . . . particularly any woman
who has been a daughter or mother!
Other suggested reading:
This book is very similar in style to Practical Magic and Turtle Moon, my previous
favorites by Alice Hoffman.
