Summary:
This dark and suspenseful tale should entertain all adventure and horror
readers, as well as some fantasy readers. Jamie is sent to live with nuns until
adulthood when he joins in exotic sea adventures. Eventually, Jamie goes to the
small town of Hawkes Harbor and is hired by the weird Grenville Hawke, who Jamie
soon begins calling It, Thing, Vampire. Hawke almost kills Jamie but then
enslaves him for years. Jamie is sent to an institution for treatment because
he gets amnesia and is afraid of the dark. Dr. McDevitt helps Jamie uncover his
past and learns what fear is too.
I would recommend this book!
Why?
Both Grenville and Jamie learn not to depend on each other and try to live
freely, but it appears that only death can free Jamie. This is Hinton's first
novel for adults. Her style and chandling of troubled youth is strong in this
story. It is gritty, terrifying and engaging.
