Title: Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation
Author: Lynne Truss
type of book: Nonfiction -- Language and Humor
call number: 428.2 TRU
|
This book is strong in language.
Summary:
This book is a funny, fast read for "sticklers" of the usage of the
English language, whether in the U.K or the U.S. It can be useful for those
wishing to learn more or improve their knowledge about punctuation. In
addition, she covers some interesting moments in the history of punctuation.
I might recommend this book.
Why?
Truss's discussion about how sloppy and stupid native speakers of English have
become concerning grammar and punctuation usage is interesting, as well as her
citing of probable reasons for the decline, such as no grammar classes in K-12
education, emailing, text messaging, instant messaging, and the free for all on
the Internet. Her concern that proper punctuation is an endangered species - and that
if it goes bye-bye, then so will clear understanding and meaning in written
communication - is an important one.
