Title: Sold
Author: Patricia McCormick
type of book: Realistic Fiction
call number: Fic
|
This book is strong in story.
Summary:
Told in first person, free verse poems, Sold is the story of
13-year-old Nepali, Lakshmi, who is sold into sexual slavery in India by her
stepfather, and her struggle to survive - both mentally and physically.
I would recommend this book!
Why?
This short novel is well written. One can imagine Lakshmi's surroundings -
the sights, the scents, the colors and the sounds. The truth of the story -
that even now thousands of young girls are sold into sexual slavery, both
purposefully and unknowingly - will amaze the reader who believes that such
things are only of the past.
Other suggested reading:
Although they are set in different times and the reality is not quite as
stark, I also recommend The Bondmaid by Catherine Lim and Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden.
