Summary:
Jane Hudson returns to her high school Alma Mater, the Heart Lake School for Girls, as a Latin teacher. Tragic events of the past begin to resurface: scandal and suicides that occurred when Jane was a student appear to be coming back to haunt her. History seems to repeat itself as current students struggle with suicide attempts - or that is how it appears, as page from Jane's long-lost diary also reappear to haunt her.
Meanwhile, Jane struggles as a single mother (child care, custody, etc.) and deals with a new romance . . . all with plenty of "baggage."
I would recommend this book!
Why?
It took awhile to get into the story, but about 1/3 of the way in, I couldn't put it down. It was very atmospheric - sinister events in an ice-encrusted wonderland. The lake itself was as much a character as the people in the book; in fact, most of them were "icy" too, and it was hard to really care about them. Still, this is a good read just for the language.
Other suggested reading:
The Secret History by Donna Tartt does this genre even better.
