This book is strong in
character, story and setting.
Summary:
Four middle-aged women reunite on a luxury Mississippi riverboat cruise
to dump the ashes of a departed classmate. Thirty-five years earlier they had
been part of a very different cruise: twelve college girls on a homemade raft.
The threads of their individual lives -- from a world-famous romance author to an unmarried schoolteacher -- wind around the stories of their college relationships and expectations.
I would recommend this book!
Why?
I had pages on my "to-do" list for the past weekend, but instead I devoured
this book! And I consider it time well spent. In Smith's deceptively simple
style, she offers up remarkably complex characters and stories that stay with
you long after you finish reading. I've already recommended it to several
friends. This book really exposes the truth that "there are no grown-ups," and
the metaphor of a river voyage is perfect to illustrate the meandering course of
living LIFE, with all its bends.
Other interesting information about this book:
The original raft trip is based on an actual life experience of the
author.
