Summary:
This is the life story of Leah Cohen (only in her late 20's or early 30's at publication) who grew up in a school for the deaf. Her father was the administrator, and her mother taught there. The book also focuses on selected deaf students' lives.
I would recommend this book!
Why?
This is a fascinating, wonderfully written look at the deaf community from the inside, told by a hearing person who grew up wanting to be deaf because she was surrounded by deaf people from earliest remembrance. Ms. Cohen is in a unique position to bridge the chasm between hearing and non-hearing.
Other interesting information about this book:
The book provides an eloquent introduction to debates on cochlear implant controversy and special education for the deaf in sign language without forcing them to abandon this, their "native" speech.
