cover Title: The Nightingale
Author: Kara Dalkey

type of book: Fantasy
call number: Fic

This book is strong in character, story, language and setting.

Summary:
Set in ancient Japan, a young girl follows the directions of her guardian spirit and becomes part of the Emperor's household by playing the most beautiful music ever heard. But will she follow her spirit's commands even though they will destroy those she loves or fight against them to save the fate of the empire?

Based upon Hans Christian Andersen's story "The Nightingale," this fairy tale rewritten for adults is part of the series started by editor Terri Windling.

I would recommend this book!

Why?
The setting is beautiful! The language very descriptive. The characters are appropriately strong and weak . . . well developed in the way that suits each one best. The story is wonderfully woven. I couldn't wait to continue reading the tale. One of the best books I have read in a long time.

Other suggested reading:
There are many other books by other authors in this series. I am still working on reading (and reviewing) all of them:
  • The Sun, the Moon and the Stars by Steven Brust
  • Tam Lin by Pamela Dean
  • Fitcher's Brides by Gregory Frost
  • White as Snow by Tanith Lee
  • Jack the Giant-Killer by Charles de Lint
  • Snow White and Rose Red by Patricia Wrede
  • Briar Rose by Jane Yolen
