GUIDE TO THE YOUNG ADULT AREA

Call Numbers and Shelving

  • Section One:
    YA/Fic
    YA/Fic/SF
    YA/Fic/FAN

    These call numbers are shelved on the brown. wood shelves alphabetically by author, then title. All books with just the YOUNG ADULT FICTION sticker on the spine are shelved here. Hardcover or quality paperback (bigger sized paperbacks) books with FANTASY or SCIENCE FICTION stickers are also shelved here.
  • Section Two:
    YA/Fic/Graphic Novels
    YA/Fic/Graphic Novels/SF
    YA/Fic/Graphic Novels/FAN

    These books have a special section at the end of the brown, wood shelves and are labeled "Graphic Novels"; they are found after the Zs of the regular YA fiction. These books have a YOUNG ADULT FICTION sticker AND a GRAPHIC NOVEL sticker on the spine. These books are almost always shelved by the general title, characters' or Series' name. (For example, all stickered Star Wars graphic novels get shelved generally under "Star Wars.")
  • Section Three:
    YA/PB/SF
    YA/PB/Fan

    Genre specific paperbacks, whether stand alones or serials, are marked with a YOUNG ADULT FICTION sticker AND either a SCIENCE FICTION or FANTASY sticker. These books are almost always mass-market paperbacks. They get shelved on the spin racks marked for their genre and set on top of the brown, wood shelves. These spin racks are sorted into author or series areas. For example, all of J.R.R. Tolkien's YA/ PB/ FAN mass-market paperback books are kept together in one column of a Fantasy spin rack and all the Star Wars: New Jedi Order mass-market serials are kept together in one column of a Science Fiction spin rack. There are mini title/author signs on all the fantasy/science fiction spin racks. There are also a few columns for stand alones labeled “Miscellaneous.”

  • Section Four:
    YA/PB/Series Rack
    • These books are mass-market paperback serials. They have a YOUNG ADULT FICTION sticker on the spine with a red, blue or green dot on the YA sticker. They are shelved on the 4-tiered spin rack that stands on the floor. There are small series title signs on all the spin rack shelves.
