Title: River Boy
Author: Tim Bowler
type of book: YA Fiction
call number: YA/FIC
|
This book is strong in character, story and setting.
Summary:
Jess's aging Grandpa, an artist, wants to see his old home by
the river again. Just before they leave for vacation, he has a heart
attack. He is very sick but leaves the hospital and demands they go on the
trip. Jess's parents are very worried about him. Grandpa begins painting a
picture of the river and calls it River Boy - but there is no boy in the painting. Each day Grandpa becomes weaker, and he worries he cannot finish his most
important painting. Jess helps him finish. Every time Grandpa gets sick and
incapacitated, Jess sees a young boy in the river. He only speaks once in a
while; then, he disappears mysteriously.
I would recommend this book!
Why?
This book is a beautiful and moving story about family, especially about
the relationship between a young girl and her crotchety, yet lovable, Grandpa.
It is mysterious, having many supernatural elements such as the always
disappearing boy. This story is also a wonderful display of having respect and
love for an older generation, without being overly mushy. Through the character
Jess, readers will learn just how much there is to learn from the world. The
relationship between Jess and her Grandpa is believable and how Jess deals with
seeing old age, sickness, and dying is portrayed accurately. I could find no
real weakness in the novel, only strengths.
