Title: Gathering Blue
Author: Lois Lowry
type of book: YA Fiction
call number: YA/FIC
|
This book is strong in character, story, setting.
Summary:
In a society that doesn't tolerate imperfections, Kyra's mother
fought for her physically deformed child to live. Because her father's
family were important members of the community, she was spared banishment or
death. When her mother dies unexpectedly, she is told she must go the Waste and
wait for the monsters to kill her. It is believed that she cannot have any useful purpose since she
has a bad leg.
But Kyra's special skills with weaving and dyeing save her from banishment.
Kyra is treated with honor and has access to the Council's secrets.
I would recommend this book!
Why?
This is the companion novel to Lowry's The Giver. Both books deal with issues of conformity and cause readers to ponder deep questions, such as what they might do if they found out a secret truth so mean and terrible it made them want to run away.
Other suggested reading:
The Giver, also by Lois Lowry
