This book is strong in character, story and setting.
Summary:
In this first book in the Bartimaeus Trilogy, magician-in-training Nathaniel is
sold by his parents at the age of five to live as an apprentice to Arthur
Underwood, a mean and cruel master, who doesn't deal very well with the fact he is
only a middle ranking magician. Thankfully, Nathaniel's master's wife, Martha, shows
some kindness towards Nathaniel while he is growing up. On his 11th birthday,
Nathaniel is humiliated and disgraced by a follow magician and vows vengeance.
He summons the 5,000 year old djinni, Bartimaeus, so he can steal the Amulet of
Samarkand and use it against Lovelace, the magician who cruelly disgraced him.
I would recommend this book!
Why?
This Harry Potter like novel is full of adventure, magic and
hilarious wit, which will have readers anxiously waiting to read book two,
Golem's Eye. It is a fast-paced read with a richly created fantasy world. It
should help readers get their fix until the next Harry Potter novel is
published.
Other suggested reading:
The Golem's Eye, also by Jonathan Stroud
Shadowmancer
and Wormwood by G.P. Taylor
Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
