Summary:
This story takes place during an overseas voyage to England to visit the aging and sick Bompie (grandpa). Sophie doesn't like boats or water, and she hides from her sad past, blocking it out. During the voyage, each person on the boat has to teach everyone something, so Sophie decides to tell everyone stories about Bompie's life. Her young cousins think she's making the stories up because she has never met Bompie. Tensions build as the voyage continues. Are the stories that Sophie tells everyone true? Will she and her family learn to get along with each other? And, why is Sophie so afraid of water and boats anyway?
