Title: Sparks: An Urban Fairytale
Author: Lawrence Marvit
type of book: YA Fiction and Romance and Graphic Novel
call number: YA/FIC/Graphic Novels
|
This book is strong in character, story and setting.
Summary:
This is a good story that includes the themes of romance, friendship, over coming obstacles, growing up and fitting in.
Jo is a plain looking girl who has no friends (only two buddies as
workers/mechanics). She dreams of her own prince charming and writes in her diary all
the time because she has no social life. She builds a "prince charming" out of spare
auto parts as a joke while daydreaming to herself. That same night a lightning
storm brings him into life and he follows her home.
Jo teaches him to read and write using flash cards. They both take up astronomy
as a hobby. He meets the neighbor boy and gets named Galahad, while they play
in the "magical ruins" of a burnt down apartment building.
One day, Jimmy and Galahad are playing in the ruins and Jimmy falls, then dies.
Galahad carries him home and people believe he's a monster who killed Jimmy.
He goes into hiding from all people except Jo.
I would recommend this book!
Why?
Over the course of the story, Galahad asks many questions about life,
death, heaven and hell, friendship, beauty, love, and sacrifice. Eventually,
Galahad realizes he loves Jo, and Jo soon learns what life is really about when
some serious actions and consequences take place. Jo learns the hard way that
to find yourself you must ask questions and evaluate the answers.
Note: This is for older teens who are 9th grade and up. There is some swear
language and there is a scene of intimacy.
