Title: Feeling Sorry for Celia
Author: Jaclyn Moriarty
type of book: YA Fiction
call number: YA/FIC
|
This book is strong in character and story.
Summary:
Elizabeth doesn't really fit in at her private school and her best friend Celia
is even more of an outcast. At the beginning of the novel, Elizabeth is writing
and answering her first few letters and readers discover that Celia is not at
school. Celia has run away from home yet again, but this time she has not
phoned Elizabeth to say that she's Ok. Eventually, Elizabeth receives a postcard from
Celia saying she joined the circus. Also, Christina (the letter pen pal) and
Elizabeth start becoming good friends, at least through writing.
Elizabeth starts talking to one of popular cute boys (Saxon Walker) at school
who happens to be a runner like her. They talk and become friends. Celia's
postcards get more depressing and scary and Saxon convinces Elizabeth they must
go and rescue Celia from the circus.
When Celia was gone some bad things happened with Christina, her pen pal, like
having sex for the first time, thinking she might be pregnant, and breaking up
with her boyfriend. Also, one of Christina's friends, who rides the same bus
as Elizabeth, has a secret crush on Elizabeth and leaves anonymous letters.
I would recommend this book!
Why?
This is a good story with lots of interesting characters with real life
qualities. The format of the book is unique in that the whole story is told
only through letters, never in the traditional prose style.
