Title: A Living Nightmare (Cirque du Freak, Book 1)
Author: Darren Shan
type of book: YA Fiction / Horror
call number: YA/Fic
|
This book is strong in character, story and setting.
Summary:
Darren and his best friend Steve see a flyer about a freak show and want to
sneak out and buy tickets. They get the tickets and go to see the show, despite
warnings from a teacher at school. Darren and Steve are amazed by the
performances from the Cirque du Freak: a werewolf, a fat man who can eat
anything, a woman who can grow a beard, and Mr. Crepsley with his friend Madam
Octa, the most poisonous spider in existence. Darren loves spiders and wants to
have a Madam Octa for his own. During the performance Steve recognizes Mr.
Crepsley as the vampire Vur Horsten.
After the show, Steve sends Darren home so he can talk to Mr. Crepsley.
Darren is afraid to leave his friend behind alone, so he hides in the theater's
balcony. Steve confronts Mr. Crepsley for what he truly is - a vampire - and asks
Vur Horsten to make him a vampire's assistant. Horsten samples Steve's blood
to see if it's "good", but finds out Steve has evil blood, so he refuses.
Steve swears revenge.
I would recommend this book!
Why?
This book is full of chilling creepiness and the rest of the series only gets darker
and creepier.
Something happens with Madam Octa and Steve. Darren must make a life changing
and very serious decision by making a bargain with Vur Horsten. This bargain
sets things into motion that will haunt Darren forever.
