In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Massillon Public Library is pleased to announce the winners of its 2021 Poetry Contest. In all, 23 poets entered 40 original poems. In the adult category, Shannon Nussbaum won with her poem “At the Bluestone.” In the Grades 9-12 category, the winner was Leon Walsh for “Scarred Fingers.” In the Grades 3-8 category, the winner was Ayla Barnes for her poem “Acting.”
“Picking a winner is always challenging,” said contest judge Duane Dodson (local, published poet and full-time Assistant Professor at Stark State College of Technology). “I wanted to give every entrant a hug or a handshake because it was clear that their poems were from the heart. Writing poetry can be very therapeutic and cathartic.”
The winner from each of these categories was awarded a $50 gift card to Amazon, which was generously donated by the Junior Friends of the Massillon Public Library. Winners were also invited to read their works at the library’s Virtual Poetry Read-In on Tuesday, April 20.
