As a part of The Big Read, the Massillon Public Library invites the public to the 15th annual Poetry Read-In on Tuesday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. online via Zoom.
Bring your original poems, share the work of your favorite poet, or just sit back and enjoy listening to some great recitations. Each reader’s selections must be family-friendly and limited to five minutes.
Each year during the month of March and in preparation for the Poetry Read-In, the Massillon Public Library hosts a poetry contest in recognition of National Poetry Month. Many of those who submit poems during the contest read their works at the Poetry Read-In. Poetry contest judge Duane Matthew Dodson will announce the winners in the three different age group categories and winners will be sent their prizes, gift cards to Amazon, generously donated by the Junior Friends of the Massillon Public Library. Mr. Dodson’s work “The Cravin’” won “Most Highly Commended” in the 2011 Margaret Reid Poetry Contest as a Humorous Poem/Parody. His primary poetic influence is Robert Frost, and the vast majority of his work is traditional in nature, his favorite structured form being the sonnet. He will regale the crowd with a few of his own poems to round out the evening.
The Big Read is a community reading program focused on a single book. This National Endowment for the Arts initiative, in partnership with Arts Midwest, supports community reading programs across the country. Massillon Museum and its amazing community partners, including the Massillon Public Library, create innovative and critical programs highlighting the book themes, and exposing participants to new genres and ideas. The selected book is offered to the community for free so that many can participate. Pick up a free copy of the book at the library while supplies last!
This event is open to the public. Registration is required and will close at 11:59 p.m. on April 18.
The Massillon Public Library is located at 208 Lincoln Way East, and the Second Street entrance is handicapped accessible.
